36 x 36 in. | Acrylic on canvas
An elegy is a song of mourning, and this painting mourns for the Arctic. High, snow-covered peaks rise against a deep blue sky, and the glacier between them is slowly melting into the valley below. That meltwater runs down as dark, muddy runoff that swirls around a white horse.
The horse stands for freedom and the ability to move, and here it has fallen into the flood it didn’t cause. Its pale mane still blows wild, but its body is sinking into the mud as it turns its head and fights to rise. In place of the usual polar bear, a horse makes the loss feel closer to home: when the ice disappears, it isn’t only something far away that we lose.
The painting holds beauty and grief at the same moment. It asks us to look at what is melting away while there’s still time to act.
